Skipanes is part of a chain of villages stretching over a distance of 10 kilometres on the east side of Skálafjørður-inlet on Eysturoy.
The village was founded in 1841.
Skipanes means ‘foreland of ships’ in Faeroese. Vikings had their ships harboured here in the 8th century.
Tróndur i Gøtu (Tróndur Gøtuskegg) had his ships harboured here around year 1000.
If the place was inhabited in those days is not known.
