Kaldbaksbotnur is located in the bottom of Kaldbaksfjørður on the east coast of Streymoy.
The village consists of only one farm.
Kaldbaksbotnur and Kaldbak were connected to the road-net in 1980 when the road to Tórshavn opened. The tunnel from Kaldbaksbotnur to Signabour is now the main thoroughfare from Tórshavn to the villages up north. That tunnel was opened in 1992.
In the mountains above Kaldbaksbotnur is a valley called ‘Mjørkadalur’ which means ‘Foggy Valley’. The  Danish Navy has a base here and on the top of the high mountains NATO has some huge radar-domes.

A legend from the 14th century tells about battles in Mannafellsdalur, which is a valley in the area.
The fighting parties were men from the south part of the country on one side and from the north part on the
other side. The men from the south were dissatisfied with the high taxes laid on them to finance the building of the new cathedral in Kirkjubøur.
The men from the north won the first battle. The number of casualties was high and the undulated ground  is said to be due to the many buried men.
The men from the south won the second battle. They had allied themselves with two Viking-ships that they
sent to ravage the north-islands in order to keep part of the men from the north busy while fighting the rest
in a battle in Kollafjørður.
The leader of the loosing party the bishop of Kirkjubøur was killed in Kirkjubøur. The execution was done by a man from Akraberg near Sumba. He could do this as he was heathen and feared neither God nor the Pope.
